XV: The Devil.

The closer you get to your own truth, the more you perceive contradiction.  The Fool’s journey of self discovery means discovering the dark side.

The devil is a satyr – half man, half goat.  This is sometimes like the “scapegoat” we  blame for our problems.  The man and woman are chained up, but if you look closely, they can easily escape those chains.  Often times we feel controlled by situations or imprisoned by circumstance, but much of our destiny is within our control.  Interestingly, the man and woman are starting to grow little horns – the longer they stay under the influence of the Devil, the more they start to look like him.

some of my favorite, non-devilish goats

Upright meaning: You may feel controlled by by something.  This can be materialism, addiction, lust, greed.  You name it.  What attachments are standing in your way from achieving what you want in life?  You can miss out on life because you’re chasing that Devil.  By letting go of those attachments, you gain freedom.

Reversal: You may feel trapped by an unhealthy relationship, addiction, some other attachment, but you’re starting to realize it.  You’re starting to realize that you can change!  How wonderful.  You may be detaching from outcomes and starting to see a new perspective.  Examine the freedom that comes from letting go.

The devil reminds us of our unhealthy attachments.  The Devil asks us if we can overcome our attachments and find some freedom.  It’s okay to savor.  Celebrate life and all the wonderful earthly things there are to experience and enjoy.  But the Devil reminds us to keep things in balance.  By freeing yourself from what has a hold over you, the closer you get to understanding who you are and how to make your life meaningful.

    • Thanks! I have so many books and websites I use as sources, so what I put together is usually a brief version of things I connect with in my own words. Biddy Tarot has lots of good info. I also love the tarot database summaries on the Mystic Monday and Golden Tarot apps. 🙂
