VII of Wands/7 of Fire: Courage

seven of wands

The Seven of Wands card is all about courage.  The figure is being met with several challengers, but he must stand his ground.  It’s about developing conviction and not backing down.

The figure here, like the Fool, is at the edge of a cliff.  While the Fool heads in the direction of the cliff joyfully, here the figure is backed into that position.  In both cases, the figures seem unaware that the cliff is so close.  As in a number of cards, the mountains under the figure represent challenges we need to overcome.  One thing that always makes me smile about this card is the two different shoes the figure is wearing.  This is an indication that he may not have conviction about his own stance around the issues he’s in conflict about and that he’s on uneven footing, so to speak.

Upright meaning: After the success of the Six of Wands, the figure faces a challenge.  Success doesn’t come easily, and of course, he’s going to have to maintain that position at the top.  Expect competition to ramp up in your life.  If you get lazy, you’ll lose the successful position you’re enjoying.  This is about having conviction in your ideas, fighting for what you believe in, and taking a stand.  Doing so requires a great deal of courage, but you’ve got it in you.  Believe in yourself.  To build your confidence, consider the challenges you’ve already successfully overcome and all the lessons you’ve learned along the way.  In order to have this courage to stand up, you need to be clear with yourself about what you believe in and what you’re fighting for.  These beliefs will be challenged, so be ready to defend them.

Reversed: You may feel overwhelmed by constant competition or judgement from others.  This can also be about being unsure in your beliefs.  You’re struggling with what to do and how to move forward.  You need a confidence boost – return to the Six of Wands and consider all you’ve achieved.

The Seven of Wands is about the courage of your convictions.  Stand up for what you believe in and stay true to yourself.  By developing your internal convictions, you’ll develop new strengths and greater confidence going forward.
